On Sunday afternoon my father and I made the drive out to the Choteau Pool section of the McClellan-Kerr Wildlife Management Area which lies between Wagoner (to the north) and Muskogee (to the south) off od Highway-69. Located near the Verdigris River (and not far from the confluence of the Verdigris, Arkansas, and Grand rivers), the WMA is a fantastic spot to watch waterfowl in the winter - it is also a ridiculously popular hunting spot, so I'm told.

We walked on the west bank of the ponds, watching the waterfowl from afar with my scope. The Choteau Pool never disappoints when it comes to waterfowl and this trip was no exception. I saw the "usual suspects" (waterfowl I see reguarly in Tulsa and the vicinity) : Mallards, Gadwall, Northern Shovelers, and American Coots. While scanning the large groups of feeding fowl I spotted a single Northern Pintail feeding. Then as we looked around more we saw close to 20 total in the area. It has been well over a year since I have seen any Pintail, so it was nice to see them again - I really appreciate the distinctive markings.

While walking near the water a shorebird of some type sprung from its hiding spot and flew to the other side of the pond. Only later was I able to spot him (after he flew away from us again): a single Wilson's Snipe.

We observed a Red-tailed Hawk sitting on a small tree in the middle of the pond - the waterfowl seemed unconcerned with his presence. A single Red-shouldered Hawk was seen soaring above us.

But the highlight of the raptor sightings (and the trip, in my opinion) was the Northern Harrier we were fortunate enough to observe. We first noticed him flying low to the water near some tall grass in the middle of the pond. We followed his flight and watched him slowly spiral up above us, all the while looking down for a rodent to feast on. I have always found harriers to be amazingly graceful - and intimidating - their hearing abilities combined with hawk-eye vision make for a formidable bird of prey.

It was a great day for birding, despite the chilly wind. We were able to see a variety of different birds at the Choteau Pool - though the Northern Harrier took the prize for best show.

About the North Canadian River
(from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Canadian_River)

The North Canadian River is a tributary of the Canadian River, approximately 440 miles (710 km) long, that flows through New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma in the United States.
The North Canadian River rises just east of Des Moines, New Mexico in Union County, New Mexico; it is known as Corrumpa Creek. From here and throughout the Oklahoma Panhandle, it normally does not have much standing water. From there it flows eastwardly through the Oklahoma Panhandle, where it is known as the Beaver River. The Beaver River is dammed near Hardesty as Optima Dam. Originally approved in the 1930s, it was envisioned to provide drinking water to area communities, but construction did not occur until the 1960s. The Coldwater Creek empties into the Beaver River at Optima Dam. It flows southeastward into the Texas Panhandle into Sherman County, Texas for six miles, turning northeast and back into the Oklahoma Panhandle before continuing on to the east. It enters Northwest Oklahoma and turns southeast and takes the name North Canadian River where it is joined by Wolf Creek just south of the town of Fort Supply, Oklahoma. It is dammed at Canton, Oklahoma in Blaine County where it forms Canton Lake. It flows past Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 708 km, joining the Canadian River.

About Boiling Springs State Park:
(from http://www.travelok.com/listings/view.profile/id.672)

Boiling Springs State Park, an oasis on the plains, captures some of the finest elements of nature. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps built the park and named it after one of the naturally-occurring springs, which is now showcased in a newly-built outdoor wooden complex. For a day trip, stroll around the recently-constructed structure and learn about Boiling Springs State Park’s history, while taking in the nearby beauty, or turn your visit into an extended stay.
Wildlife is one of the many awe-inspiring features of the 820 acre park. Various species of animals dominate the area, including whitetail deer, wild turkeys, raccoons, coyotes, bobcats, beavers, badgers, rabbits, skunks, and opossums. Cabins, RV sites, and tent campsites are available, as well as group camping. Over 150 picnic tables and grills are scattered throughout the park. Guests can access one of three pavilions, furnished with electrical outlets, a cookout grill, and water. Tourists can also enjoy Boiling Springs’ 18 hole golf course, swimming, nature and hiking trails, fishing, boating, and water skiing. Pack up the family and head to Boiling Springs State Park, where nature inspires vacation

Sure enough, as soon as I start packing up the car to leave every bird in the vicinity gather near the cabin. It had been a pretty quiet weekend for birds around the cabin we were staying at, but not Sunday morning. I guess I should be happy that I got to see them before we departed.

The titmice were particularly gregarious - chasing one another all over the pines that were near our cars. Shelli had mentioned that she heard a group of birds fighting outside the cabin on Saturday morning, I am guessing it was the same group of titmice.

While driving south on Highway 48, on my way to the Keystone WMA, I could see several large flocks of birds flying over Lake Keystone to the east of the highway. I could not make out exactly what the birds were, but I could tell they were large. I suspected they could be either pelicans, cormorants, or maybe some type of geese (Snow or Canada).

At the WMA I followed Cottonwood Creek north toward the shallow lake that has formed near the Cimmaron River. I noticed a large amount of Northern Flickers in the area. A Red-shouldered Hawk passed by my position by the creek and took up a post atop a large snag (a common perch for hawks, I have noticed). I could hear a group of sparrows calling to one another from the tallgrasses and plants to the side of the creek - eventually one could be seen - a Song Sparrow.

As I approached the mouth of the creek, where it meets the lakebed, I could see several large "clouds" of birds approaching from the east. I quickly moved closer to the lakebed and setup my scope to see what was incoming. Very quickly I could see that the incoming horde of birds were American White Pelicans - a amazingly large bird. As I swept my scope across the lake I could see that several hundred were already gathered along the lake's edge. Some of this group took wing and flew to the west, while simultaneously hundreds of others flocked into the southeast corner of the lake.

I made sure to keep absolutely still so as not to scare off any of the approaching birds. Hundreds of the peilcans landed to the east of me, often circling above me in search of a good spot to land. It was amazing to see so many birds of that size all fly in to one area at the same time - almost like watching squadrons of bombers approaching an airfield.

I sat and watched the group preen themselves for over 30 minutes - it was truly incredible to watch such a large amount of large birds commune together. Over the course of the half-hour several "sets" of the pelicans would fly to the west. I counted about 600 before I lost count, so I estimated the total number to be around 1200 (a low estimate, I believe).

I have seen groups of pelicans on Lake Keystone before, but never anywhere close to 1200. I am very much looking forward to my next oppurtunity to visit the Keystone WMA along Cottonwood Creek.

While watching a Great Blue Heron fly across Mallard Lake, I noticed a large raptor perched above the water. The heron's passing flight must have distrubed the raptor because he abandoned his perch and flew above the water before finding a new perch. I identified the raptor as an Osprey, a new addition to the Lifelist and an amazing bird to see. Later in the hike I would see him fly over one of the oxbow lakes south of the North Woods trail, this time with a fish in his talons!
